Guillain-Barré Syndrome
What is Guillain-Barré Syndrome?
It is a rare but serious autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks healthy nerve cells in your peripheral nervous system (nerves outside of your brain and spinal cord). GBS can range from mild to severe symptoms, where a person is unable to breathe independently. Fortunately, most people recover from GBS but some people still have a degree of weakness following recovery.
Symptoms of Guillain-Barré Syndrome
People who suffer from GBS will present with a range of symptoms such as:
- Muscle weakness
- Muscle stiffness from prolonged weakness
- Reduced mobility
- Balance problems
- Sensory problems such as pins and needles or numbness
- Pain
- Reduced swallow reflex and/or speech problems
- Abnormal heart rate or blood pressure
