Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and the New Fesia Walk Device
Functional electrical stimulation (FES) involves stimulation of the peripheral nerves that supply the paralysed muscle using electrodes that may be implanted or placed on the surface of the skin. The aim of FES is to enhance motor relearning, muscle strength, reduce muscle atrophy, increase/improve circulation and improve range of movement.
Who is suitable for FES?
Individuals who suffer from muscle paralysis as a result of injury to the central nervous system can benefit from using FES. Examples of some neurological conditions that may benefit from FES include Stroke, Cerebral Palsy, Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia and Spinal cord injury

Physiotherapy and FES with Fesia Walk
Fesia Walk is a new neurological rehabilitation and compensatory device designed to improve dorsiflexion (foot elevation) and plantarflexion (foot pressing down) for people suffering from foot drop and weakness as a result of central nervous system disease or injury.
During walking, the Fesia Walk electrically stimulates the motor nerves of the effected leg to achieve appropriate activation of the muscles that elevate (lift) or plantarflex (press down) the foot so that the walking pattern improves.
Advantages to this new device is that once it has been set up by your treating therapist it is easy for you to apply and use independently. Time taken to achieve correct placement of the electrodes is not an issue with this device as it has a multifield electrode (wraps around your leg) which allows for better selectivity of movement. The sensor and stimulator connect via bluetooth and the device is much more discreet than other devices such as those that require wires for connectivity/communication.
