Functional Neurological Disorder (FND)
What is Functional Neurological Disorder?
Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) is a condition where there is a problem with the functioning of the nervous system and how the brain and body sends/receives signals. Investigations such as MRI brain scans and EEG’s are usually normal in patients with FND, even though a patient may present with a wide range of neurological symptoms such as limb weakness and/or seizures.
Symptoms of Functional Neurological Disorder
A person with FND may experience a variety of the following symptoms:
- Muscle weakness
- Tremor
- Muscle spasms
- Reduced mobility
- Pain
- Fatigue
- Sensory problems such as numbness or tingling
- Visual problems
- Seizures (not epilepsy)
- Blackouts/fainting
- Sleep problems
How our Physiotherapy can help with Functional Neurological Disorder
People who suffer from FND require specialist therapy to help improve their functional outcomes/condition. At Neurotherapy Worx we can help to:
- Provide education and understanding of your condition
- Liaise and feedback with other professionals such as a consultant or psychiatrist that may be involved in your care
- Provide specific physiotherapy intervention focussing on diverted attention techniques and automatic movements to help improve your mobility and function
- Educate and involve family and carers within your treatment plan
- Virtual reality based therapy which can be used for exercise, rehabilitation or relaxation
- Aquatic therapy (Hydrotherapy)
