Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapy

What is Paediatric Neurological Physiotherapy?

We assess and treat children and young adults with a neurological condition or injury, resulting from damage to the brain, spinal cord or extremities of the body.  Our patients may experience weakness in their limbs, body or face. Treatment plans aim to overcome motor deficits in order to improve active movement and function. For some children this maybe learning new skills and achieving some of their developmental milestones.  This is done through specialist handling/ facilitation and lots of play; which encourages ‘normal movement’ patterns and therefore enables more efficient movement.

Paediatric Neurological Conditions we Treat

We treat a variety of neurological conditions such as cerebral palsy, neuromuscular conditions, developmental delay, Erbs palsy, spina bifida, hydrocephalus and Down’s syndrome . Our highly specialised paediatric neurological physiotherapists are experts in analysing ‘normal’ and ‘abnormal’ movement patterns. Paediatric Neurological physiotherapists have a wide knowledge of how the body and nervous system works and its normal development in order to be able to influence development and regain or learn new skills.

The area of damage to the brain or nervous system can result in a disruption in normal functioning of the muscles and ability to move.  This can lead to children not achieving their expected milestones in the average timeframes expected for children.  Through specialist handling and influencing the correct movement patterns, we can help improve a child’s movement, their ability to mobilise and sense of achievement.

Some neurological conditions can be progressive in nature. As a condition develops symptoms may worsen over time, the skills a child gained when they were younger can become difficult or they may lose those abilities. This includes conditions such as neuromuscular diseases (DMD, SMA, SMARD). As experienced neurological physiotherapists, we can help delay/slow down physical deterioration by providing specialist input to help maintain your child’s mobility and independence for as long as possible. We are highly experienced in knowing how to maintain muscle length and a good posture, encourage activities of enjoyment over activities of daily living.  We can also provide respiratory support  and advice if required.

We can empower individuals and families throughout their rehabilitation process in order to help achieve goals and improve quality of life following the diagnosis of a neurological injury or neuromuscular condition. Every person is different which is why we assess and treat each person on an individual basis in order to develop a tailored programme to your needs, providing regular reviews where and when necessary.

How Our Therapy Helps Your Child

All of our treatment plans focus on developing and maintain developmental milestones and independence to our patients.  As highly experienced paediatric physiotherapist we utilise play, sport and other activities of interest to your child to encourage the most participation and best outcomes.

Therapy can be multi-disciplinary where required and is individually tailored to your child’s needs. We create home exercise programmes and deliver training to family, educational support and care staff – educating them to help your child manage their condition in the most effective, client centred way.

Our ‘hands on’ therapy approach helps to improve movement, sensation, balance and function which will help increase independence and quality of life. We can provide appropriate exercises or games, tailored to your child needs and/or set up a gym routine. There may be alternative activities such as horse riding, cycling or skiing that you would like to try. Where appropriate we can help assess and provide advice and input for you so that your child may be able to experience some of these activities.

Innovative Therapies and Hydrotherapy for Children

We have innovative therapies such as immersive and non-immersive virtual reality therapies. These therapies can help influence recovery through virtual stimulation while focusing on increasing activity and independence. These therapies can challenge movement, strength, balance, coordination, sensation, attention and cognition.

At Neurotherapy Worx we have access to aquatic therapy (hydrotherapy) where we can assess and set up a plan of exercise (and relaxation) in the water. A period of aquatic therapy can be provided within your child’s rehabilitation plan and/or set up for you to complete with a family member/s or carers with regular reviews and progression of exercises within your programme.

What Does Tailored Care Mean for Your Child?

Children learn most effectively through play and repeated positive experiences.  Following a thorough assessment, a plan with be made, taking into consideration your child’s abilities and challenges, in line with the goals and aspirations which you and your child may have.  The plan will be made into smaller achievable goals utilising a variety of activities to assist in achieving your child’s goals to reach their maximal potential.

As professional therapists we are experienced in team working and would be keen to work alongside our NHS colleagues, education provision, social care provisions, private care teams and case management services if this was deemed appropriate.  Team working would look different for each individual child and their family depending on the support you require, and which you feel would be in the best interest of your child.  It could be the sharing of information and ideas as agreed by the legal guardians, providing care givers with treatment plans and the training required to carry out the intervention, working together to review appropriate equipment, support with respiratory care and specific moving and handling to your child’s needs.
