Brain Injury 

What is a brain Injury?

There are 2 types of brain injury:

  • Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)– Caused by an external force such as a blow to the head. This causes damage to the skull or the brain can move around inside the skull, causing damage.
  • Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)- Non traumatic injury that causes damage to the brain by internal factors such as the lack of oxygen to the brain, exposure of toxins to the brain, infections, pressure from tumours etc

How our Physiotherapy can help with Brain Injury

Following a brain injury, a person can be left with significant physical, cognitive and behavioural problems. At Neurotherapy Worx we can help in the following ways:

  • Specific ‘hands on’ neurological physiotherapy to improve active movement and function
  • Provision of home exercise plans and/or gym plans in order to help improve strength and stamina
  • Balance re-education
  • Gait re-education
  • Exercises to help improve sensory awareness or reduce hypersensitivity problems
  • Provision of stretches and a stretching plan to help manage muscle stiffness or spasticity
  • Referral to relevant consultants for ongoing spasticity management where needed
  • Rehabilitation to help improve independence in completion of day to day tasks around the home
  • Assessment and provision of functional electrical stimulation (FES)
  • Input and education on fatigue management
  • Referral for Speech and communication input where needed
  • Referral to other services such as an orthotist (splinting/support), sensory impairment team, driving assessment team, wheelchair services etc as required

During your first appointment, you share your goals with us and we conduct a physical assessment

We may prescribe some exercises to help you to address weakness, move more efficiently and improve your quality of life
